A new and exciting motorsport event is set to hit the streets of Port Lincoln. The EP Autosports Club Committee are a small group of motorsport enthusiasts who are bringing an exciting and unique timed sprint event to our town. It will be the first time Port Lincoln has hosted a CAMS approved closed street, high level, tarmac motorsport event. It will be held over the Easter Weekend of April 15th – 16th 2017.
There is huge excitement and support from the locals, so the “pressure” is on for the event to succeed. Having a wide variety of cars and competitors from different classes and types, all competing for outright position, is what the organisers believe will make this a unique event.
Entries so far include a GTHO from the 1971 Bathurst 500, to a V8 Supercar, from an Aussie Race Car to a V8 Racing Ute to some awesome tarmac rally cars. Add that to a street circuit that has everything from tight left and right turns to fast sweeping corners and quick straights, this will be exciting for both competitor and spectator alike. To date, 34 nominations have been received, with an expectation that 100 nominations will be forwarded from which a selection committee will invite competitors to ensure a competitive field.
As well as the competitors, the organisers are attempting to attract racing identities to the event to make it a success. This event is not intended to be a “one off” with organisers hoping it will appear on everyone’s calendar as a “must do”.
Naming Rights sponsor Peter Teakle Wines, and Major Sponsor, the City of Port Lincoln, were quick to indicate their support, with other sponsors coming on board as planning continues.
The event is heading in the direction of a motorsport festival. There is the potential of a SA Car club to culminate their run in Port Lincoln on the Friday, concluding with a car show. The car show would include local car and motorcycle clubs. The Northern Drag and Motorsport Association are interested in showcasing local and club drag cars. Aerobatics and helicopter rides are under consideration as well as racing boats. It is intended that the extra attractions will complement the weekend’s action, and not to take the focus away from the main event.
The program starts with a prologue on Saturday the 15th of April 2017. The actual Street Sprint event will take place on Sunday the 16th , concluding with a presentation dinner at the Nautilus Theatre on Sunday night. It is hoped that to encourage a couple of racing identities to be involved in the presentation evening.
Officials and volunteers will be a key component in ensuring the event’s success, and for it to become sustainable, all will be done to ensure they come back time and time again.
Adding a major motorsport weekend to the local calendar will add something special to the Eyre Peninsula. Many of the event’s Organising Committee are members of the Lincoln Auto Club Inc. as well.
